But it was very long-winded, repetitive, and persistently avoided addressing the basic questions and arguments at play. Such as -- what does the Law of Self Defense require and allow for? What are the roles of proportionality and double effect? You jumped right to those concepts in your neighborhood and house examples. And then, you addressed what Walter studiously avoids --researching what exactly is happening on the ground, as best determined--imperfectly--from sources other than the Israeli Government.
I would add one more reason to the pile in support of minding our own business (i.e., not getting entangled in foreign wars and alliances).
There's the not-so-small matter of a comment that DiLorenzo makes in passing, which Walter doesn't even acknowledge (perhaps because it's now taken for granted and not controversial?).

And then, you addressed what Walter studiously avoids --researching what exactly is happening on the ground, as best determined--imperfectly--from sources other than the Israeli Government.

I would add one more reason to the pile in support of minding our own business (i.e., not getting entangled in foreign wars and alliances).
There's the not-so-small matter of a comment that DiLorenzo makes in passing, which Walter doesn't even acknowledge (perhaps because it's now taken for granted and not controversial?).
Writes DiLorenzo: "Walter Block puts the lie to his own claim of all Gazan parents being terrorists when he writes elsewhere of how Hamas (created by Israel, by the way, as a counter to Al Qaeda) launches rocket attacks on Israel from the vicinity of schools."

How in the world can this explosive allegation, Israel created Hamas, go without further comment on either side of this debate?
If true, and it appears to be, it raises questions about the defensive nature of this war and who is ultimately responsible.
It also couldn't hurt to ask, who is really benefiting from all this death and destruction?
After all, war is the health of the state. So, there's an incentive for states to create the conditions for war, perhaps going so far as to stage events that will "educate" the people as to why they must fight.
There's a pattern here. Dave Smith alludes to it before every podcast: If you want to know who America's next enemy is, look at who they're funding right now. Likewise, if you want to know who the state of Israel's next enemy is....
I'd say Dave Smith is right--with the notable exception of Israel. That is, Israel, barring a revolution in the US, will never be the US's avowed enemy.
And yes, I certainly could have quoted Netanyahu and others who have said that Israel needs Hamas--as a foil for preventing a two-state solution, as a militant enemy it could point to for arguing that it cannot negotiate with such an entity, and now, as an "insurgent" force for justifying its genocidal campaign in Gaza. Also, I could have pointed to the fact that Netanyahu sent ministers to Qatar to beg them to continue funding Hamas. I'll treat all this in a subsequent installment. First, I wanted to take down Block using his own arguments to hang him with.
